Top Colouring Tips

Here’s a few tips to get the best out of your book…

  • Number one - don’t stress about your coloring! It’s supposed to be fun and relaxing. There is no ‘perfection’ with this book (I won’t allow it!) So don’t worry if you go over the lines, you don’t have nice new pencils or you can’t find the exact hade you wanted. The important thing is that you have fun and are taking some time for you.

  • Use coloured pencils or felt tipped pens. You can get more blending and vary the shade using coloured pencils, by varying the pressure - press harder for darker and more lightly for a paler shade.

  • If you prefer a brighter more zingy colour then pens are better for this, but I’d suggest using a thick piece of paper or some cardboard (like a piece of a cereal box) behind the sheet you’re colouring to stop the ink bleeding through.

  • Go gentle with pencils. It’s better to lay down multiple layers of pencil than try to press hard and get it done fast. This is mindful relaxing colouring don’t forget! Also light pressure will also prevent you piercing the paper!

  • If you want to press harder with pencils then put a thick piece of paper or some cardboard (like a piece of a cereal box) behind the sheet you’re working on - to prevent any indentation onto the pages beneath.

  • Keep your pencils sharp for small fine details.

  • You can use the side of your pencil lead if you’re colouring a large area. This creates a large, even area of colour and avoid scratchy, thin pencil strokes.

  • Did you know you can get a special ‘coloured pencil eraser’ (it won’t smudge or tear up the paper) Could be useful if you’re prone to mistakes.

  • If you prefer you can carefully slice the pages from the book first, and colour them in.

  • You can add your own extra details too. Use a black fineliner pen to add extra details like hearts, dots and cross hatching. Or add highlights in a white pen (Posca pens are great for this).

  • Use a black fineliner pen for the last few pages that I’ve left for you to create your own unique doodle designs.

idea on how to use this book

  • Carry it with you in your bag, and you can take five minutes out during your day.

  • Use it in early labour as a lovely mindful distraction technique

  • Give it as a gift for a pregnant friend

  • Once you’ve coloured in the pages you can carefully slice them out (a craft knife is bets for this or artists scalpel), and then use them to put up around your birth space. You can take them to the hospital or birth centre and put them up on the wall (remember to pack the blutac)

  • Photograph them and have them on your phone, or as your laptop screen saver. Small, regular, positive reinforcement.
